The fourth Ski Tour Clinic & Demo on Wednesday, February 22 at 7am, at Eldora Ski Resort started off with a heavy overnight snowfall, cold, and slippery driving conditions in town, which unfortunately deterred 6 of the 10 registered attendees from making the clinic & demo.
Part of skiing is surely getting to the slopes, which made me realize this is a valuable topic to cover in an upcoming blog post.
The weather on the hill was actually bluebird, cold, and crisp new snow, which made for stellar conditions.
The crew was composed by 2 novices (1 of whom had joined me on a prior clinic before), and 2 intermediates (1 of whom had also joined a prior clinic, and now wanted to try light racing gear - needless to say he’s now a convert!).
The new snow made for the perfect opportunity to learn proper tracking and gliding. Then once in the trees, as we usually do with these clinics, we focused on kickturns and navigating steeper terrain while conserving energy.
Transitions at the top are always a mixed-bag of instructions, due to the variety of gear of attendees, but we broke down the process with simple actionable top-to-bottom steps.
On the downhill, one attendee especially needed one-on-one focus, so while I focused on them, a few of the others took the opportunity to do another lap to practice the newly acquired skills.
Ski touring is an intricate sport with lots of gear, moving parts, and every-chaing weather conditions, terrain, and situations: I’m a true believer that with expert instruction and the right gear, everyone can master the sport: book your next ski touring clinic & demo!
